Book Review: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab

The world building is just amazing and the concept of having different worlds in one universe is unique. I have never read a book like this. I praise the author for writing diverse characters such as Lila, who is a strong female protagonist but also shows vulnerability that makes her more humane. Lila is a character, I believe, everyone could relate to one way or another. She is always searching for an adventure and is critical about world and looks at it in a half glass empty perspective. We are also introduced to Kell, who has this amazing gift, but despite this fact he still a down to earth guy who cares about the people around him especially Rhy.

Furthermore, just like any book that I like, I am really drawn with the politics within the book. I think it is a book wherein we can put into context International Relations Theories. We see how people can get greedy with power as seen in the government in grey London.  Power-relations are a big factor in this book. There is diversity when it comes to power. We are presented with two types of characters: empowered and marginalize characters. Also, in a realist perspective, we see how these different actors deals with uncertainty.

XOXO,
Isabel
