Book Review: Rescued by Love (Love in Bloom: The Ryders) by Melissa Foster + Giveaway

NEW RELEASE….
The Ryders are a series of stand-alone romances that may also be enjoyed as part of the larger Love in Bloom series. These hot contemporary romance novels feature alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They're flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable to readers who enjoy passionate contemporary romance and women's fiction.

In RESCUED BY LOVE...
As the daughter of a world-renowned fashion designer, Addison Dahl enjoyed a privileged life attending the most sought after parties, traveling around the world, and having anything she wanted. Until she broke free and went against her father's wishes, needing to prove to herself--and to him--that she could make it on her own. Now she's ready to take her adventures in a new direction and sets her sights on roughing it in the wilderness.

Jake Ryder followed in his father's footsteps as a top search and rescue professional. He spends his days saving those in need and his nights in the arms of willing women who offer nothing more than a few hours of sexual enjoyment. Just the way he likes it.

When Jake's sister-in-law calls, concerned because she's been unable to reach her best friend, it's up to Jake to find her and bring her home. But Addison isn't lost, and she sure as hell isn't going to be told what to do by an ornery mountain man with whom she'd spent one torrid weekend after her best friend's wedding. Jake has never left anyone behind--will Addison be his first failed rescue?

Review:
Disclaimer - I received a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

When I first read the plot of this book I was like sign me up because this is the kind of story I like to read. And when I got my copy, I quickly devoured it in one sitting.
I was just so excited and what can I say Melissa Foster has done it again. She has given the world another sexy and romantic book for us to enjoy. I think that this is the BEST book that I have read from Melissa Foster. She has matured as a writer and it is evident in this book. The characters now, such as Addison and Jake, have more dimensions that I got to really know them after reading this book. Addison came from a comfortable upbringing thus her need to become independent and in order to do that she embarks on a camping trip for ten days alone. Her need to become independent clashes with Jake, since he wants to be with her but she does not want to become reliable to him and lose her sense of independence. I guess what drawn me to this book is Addison. I can relate to her so much especially her wanting to be independent. Growing up, I have been sheltered by my parents that I was being too dependent on them and because of that I decided to move away for college and try to live alone and independent. In a way, it is the same with Addison.
I only wish that the story would focus more on the rescuing part. I though that the story would be more about Addison getting lost and Jake trying to save her. But despite lacking in those kind of action, Melissa made up for it in the actions in the bed (which were so HOT!!!!). I would totally recommend this to anyone who wants to read romantic novels. And if you like Bella Andre  and Kristan Higgins books I suggest trying this book and other of Melissa Foster's books because I am sure that you would enjoy them.

Book Tour: Surrender Series by Mariel Grey + Giveaway

Surrender of Trust (Book 1)
Lucy Goodwin knows more about horse breeding than a proper young lady should. Her brother’s thoroughbred business has given her purpose and independence, but when an accident leaves her solely in charge, despair and destruction threaten her every move. Trapped in an impossible position, Lucy must do the right thing and watch their dreams crumble, or save their livelihood at a cost too great to bear.

Lord Philip Lyton, Marquess of Chalifour is a member of the prestigious Jockey Club, dedicated to eliminating cheating in horse racing. Trouble raises its ugly head when his business partner falls foul of an accident and he’s suddenly forced to deal with the man’s sister, who seems alarmingly out of her depth. Chalifour respects Lucy’s steely resolve, but knows that single-mindedness can be the most dangerous trait of all.

She might be beautiful and beguiling, but Lucy Goodwin is keeping secrets and Chalifour is determined to find out what they are.

A Gentleman's Surrender (Book 2)
Call her a romantic--or a fool, Lady Monique Cathdon is determined to marry for love. After watching her parents tolerate an arranged betrothal, life seems too short to be wasted on keeping up appearances.

After all, what's the point of having a heart if one refuses to follow it?

With a smile the devil himself might be proud of, James Stanton is not what her mother would call a matrimonial prospect. Still, there's something about the young man that sends Lady Monique's heart thumping around her chest, and silences her voice of reason.

Unfortunately for Lady Monique, the stakes are high, and young ladies of the ton make for very poor gamblers. Especially when James Stanton is on the hunt for revenge, and won't let an innocent woman--or his own passionate desires--get in the way of righting past wrongs.

About the author
From the moment she could put pen to paper, Mariel Grey knew she wanted to be a writer. Like all good adventures however, it didn’t happen overnight; it was after several decades of working in litigation that the desire to create dramatic worlds and characters became too great to ignore. Her first foray into historical romance, Surrender of Trust, explored the grime and glamour of regency horse racing, following the determined but impoverished Lucy Goodwin and upright Lord Chalifour. Her second novel, A Gentleman’s Surrender, introduced the innocent Lady Monique and tortured Mr. Stanton, both struggling to find love in a world filled with deceit.

Though entirely at home in the ballrooms and street alleys of London past, Mariel Grey is currently working on a contemporary story set in Florida, a landscape dear to the author’s heart. When she isn’t conjuring words on her computer screen, Grey can be found on the water fishing, snorkeling, and enjoying the incredible natural beauty of her home.

Mariel has a wonderful husband (the hero of her own romantic story) as well as two mischievous rescue kittens (who are quite happy to play the role of villains). In addition to being a dutiful wife and animal wrangler, Mariel is a member of the Romance Writers of America and affiliated chapter of the Ancient City Romance Authors.

Book Review: The Art of Shifting Gears by Chi Yu Rodriguez

Disclaimer: I won a copy of this book from the author's giveaway on twitter.

About This Book:

Rae de los Santos was en route to a perfect adult life. She knew what to major in, she knew what career path she was going to pursue, and she knew who she was going to be with all the way to the realization of her dreams—until her seamless journey made a turn for the unimaginable and skidded to a stop.

All of a sudden she was facing every roadblock possible, and the people she held dear ended up running over her heart.

For a year, she distracted herself with hot lead and burnt rubber, using karting as a lifeline until she was strong enough to face the world that shunned her.

But during Rae’s junior year in college, she was again blindsided by signs that weren’t supposed to be there. Will Rae go full speed ahead? Or will the seduction of the past slow her down?

Review:

This book is very well-written. I finished reading it in one sitting. It was around midnight when I started reading and I refused to sleep because I have become addicted to Rae and her story. Rae is a character that everyone can relate to. She is very passionate about the things and people she loves, she is very sensitive, and like everybody else she goes through ups and downs. You can see her development and how she matures from the start of the book to the end. This just shows how the author has a talent for creating realistic characters that you will love or hate.

JR is another character that I admire. I love how he was there for Rae and how he always makes her smile and laugh despite the unfortunate situation she is in. He was like the sunshine after a dark storm. I also love Rae's brothers. I like their relationship with one another and how they are there for one another. The author also made an exceptional job in the characterization of Mike and Tessa. They were written in a way that you would hate them for what they did to Rae. I mean the girl's parents just died, can't they understand that she needed a little space. Ugh... Mike is a guy you wish you would never encounter or date. He is a sh*tty boyfriend to Tessa and a sh*tty friend to Rae. He just keeps dragging Rae and Tessa along because he cannot commit to only one girl.

My only problem with this book is that the romance part between Rae and JR was undeveloped. I would like the book to include more about Rae shifting her love from Mike towards JR. Don't get me wrong I love the romance between Rae and JR, it's just that it seems that their relationship evolved fast. Overall, this book will make you cry in a good way. This book is so emotional and I just want to hug Rae for the bad things that had happened to her.

About The Author:

Chi Yu Rodriguez has many feelings. Sometimes these feelings find their way to paper in the form of short stories and fiction online. Sometimes they don't come out at all and end up as unresolved sexual tension or terrible internal angst.

She prefers making imaginary people go through these feelings for her pleasure. Her muses hate her for it, and they repay her by being forever fickle.

She wrestles with them in her head everyday.

*ARC* Book Review: The Wish Granter (Ravenspire #2) by C.J Redwine

Thank you Epic Reads and National Bookstore for giving me a copy.
Title: The Wish Granter
Author: C.J Redwine
Release Date: February 14, 2017

About the Book:
(goodreads)

An epic, romantic, and action-packed fantasy inspired by the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, about a bastard princess who must take on an evil fae to save her brother’s soul, from C. J. Redwine, the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen. Perfect for fans of Graceling and the Lunar Chronicles.

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of SĂșndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

Review:
According to the author, every book in this series is a standalone. Therefore you can read this book without reading the first book, which is The Shadow Queen.

This is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. I am familiar with his story but I was not a big fan of it but this book changed it. C.J Redwine has given us a new dimension of Rumpelstiltskin. He is more ruthless, unforgiving, and manipulative. Included in this book is his story on how he became like that and like other villains he as an agenda. I like how the author included Rumpelstiltskin's background story because it made me pity him for what has happened to him in the past but at the same time hate him for the bad things he has done.

C.J Redwine really has a knack of creating amazing characters. Ari is a humble, smart, and kind character. She really loves the people around her and will do anything to protect them even if it means selling her soul. While Sebastian is another likeable character. He is very protective of Ari and is very sweet and reserve. Their character grows and matures as the story progress. I love how Ari worms her way into making Sebastian open up to her. They also compliment one another's personality as Ari is more outgoing as compared to Sebastian. Furthermore, this book is very romantic as compared to the first book and it is not as action pack as well. There are some scenes wherein it got a bit boring and are not the useful in the development of the story. Also, the author including Hansel and Gretel in this book is a nice touch. I hope the next book is about them. I also like how Lorelai and Kol, from the first book, was briefly mentioned in this book.

Lastly, this book is more about the development of the character, like how The Wish Granter became how he is, and the relationship of the characters, especially Ari and Sebastian, and Sebastian and his parents. The author has really made this story her own despite being a retelling. I really do recommend giving this book a go, especially if you like retellings and watching the Once Upon a Time series.

Book Review: The Shadow Queen (Ravenspire #1) by C.J Redwine

PLOT:
(goodreads)

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman…and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

REVIEW:

I love retellings and when I saw this book in my local bookstore and read that it was a re-telling of Snow White I immediately grab it and devoured it within a day. There was never a dull moment with this book. It is action and romance pack. Plus the characters were very diverse but they have a strong dynamic with one another.

Lorelai is a great character. She is sweet and caring but she can also be very though, intelligent, strong, and analytical. She goes out of her way to help others. And Kol at first is seen as someone who is reckless and has this "I don't care" attitude in him. But when a tragedy struck him, his character grew into this responsible mature young man who has a kingdom to run and like Lorelai he also wants to protect his sibling. Plus he is so fetching. I like the relationship between him and Lorelai. I love their conversations with one another and how they banter with each other but especially how loyal they are to one another. Leo on the other hand is a very fun character to read I love his relationship with his sister, Lorelai. And I am still sad over what happened to him. I also like Trugg. He is funny character to read. He is very loyal to Kol, which I find commendable. I love his dialogues and how he banters with the other characters. I laugh a lot during his scenes, especially when he is teasing Lorelai or Kol.

What I also about this is despite it being a retelling of Snow White it has its own uniqueness, which I like such as the dragons. And unlike the original fairy tale, it was the princess who saves the king, which is great because it shows females that they can be strong as well. Also in this novel, we see the perspective of the Queen Irina and how wicked and evil she really is.

Lastly, I recommend this book to fantasy readers, Snow White fans, and those who are interested in retellings. If you like the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer I suggest that you give this book a go.

Book Review: Saw Her Standing There by Patrick Formanes.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

About the Book:

In New York City, there were these two people, Ryan and Lane. They met in high school, fell in love, and later married. Yes, to each other. From here, it would be easy to ask, “Does anyone die? Did they turn into wizards? Witches? Ghosts? Vampires? How about zombies? Or, are they monsters of unknown origins, their only aim to annihilate their neighboring monsters by gnashing them to delicious morsels with their ridiculously sharp incisors, leaving the planet to stew in the juices and horrific odors of rotten animal flesh, splintered bones, and exposed innards, then kill each other because: (1) they get hungry again and (2) they don’t like vegetables?” No. None of that stuff will be found in this novel. Through these pages, you will learn about Ryan and Lane, who are regular humans devoid of any superpowers, as well as their fellow Filipino-American friends, and how they maneuver through personal challenges while attending their Queens high school. Follow them as they play sports, kiss (and more), use the foulest language, excel academically (at least most of them), fight, go to parties, eat food, take public transportation, and, most importantly, learn about each other.

Review:
Warning: this book contains discussions about sex and languages not suitable for younger readers.

This book is so refreshing. It is different from other contemporary young adult books that I have read in a way that it is written in a very realistic way. It is a book that is relatable, especially to teenagers like me because the conversation between the characters is what the teens are also discussing about which is love, sex, and relationships (And Food in the case of Rob). The dynamic and conversations between the characters is so good. I love how the Oder, Sam, and Ryan banter with one another and how Lane and her friends take care of one another, which also happens in real life with friends. But I really enjoyed reading Sam, Oder, and Ryan's parts of the book, especially Sam because he is so funny especially when he is talking about April.
Moreover, the dialogues in this novel are real and genuine in the sense that what the characters talked about is what teens are also talking about. The characters are also relatable for example Lane. She had a bad break-up and because of that she is skeptical about giving Ryan a try and I think that like Lane other people are like that given that kind of situation. Furthermore, I like how this book features Filipino-American teens in the United States because there are not a lot of stories about them despite their large population in that country. Also, the book shows a different kind of life teens had back then as compared to nowadays, especially in dating. In the case of Oder, long distance relationships are harder because they had to write letters to one another instead of texting, which is more convenient and faster. We can also see how communication is a big part in this book. It is also important in relationship. In addition, this book is also fast paced with it having shorter chapters, which is a good thing for me because I do not like books with long chapters.
In the end, my problem with this book is that I expected it to be a romance novel but the romance in it is like 1/4 of the book because Lane and Ryan did not meet until like more than half of the book. Nevertheless, I recommend this book to readers looking for a quick, funny, and refreshing read without the drama. If you like John Green books but without the drama you would definitely like this book and I recommend that you try it.

December 2016 Book Haul

I got a total of 10 books. Most of them were gifts and I am very thankful for them.

1. Grimm's Complete Fairytale -  The Brothers Grimm

They are the stories we've known since we were children. Rapunzel. Hansel and Gretel. Cinderella. Sleeping Beauty. But the works originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s are not necessarily the versions we heard before bedtime. They're darker and often don't end very happily—but they're often far more interesting.

This elegant edition of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales includes all our cherished favorites—Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Cap, and many more—in their original versions. With specially designed end papers, a genuine leather cover, and other enhancements, it's the perfect gift for anyone looking to build a complete home library.

Many of these tales begin with the familiar refrain of “once upon a time”—but they end with something unexpected and fascinating!

Buy: Amazon

2. Political Order and Political Decay - Francis Fukuyama

The second volume of the bestselling landmark work on the history of the modern state

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, David Gress called Francis Fukuyama's Origins of Political Order "magisterial in its learning and admirably immodest in its ambition." In The New York Times Book Review, Michael Lind described the book as "a major achievement by one of the leading public intellectuals of our time." And in The Washington Post, Gerard DeGrott exclaimed "this is a book that will be remembered. Bring on volume two."
Volume two is finally here, completing the most important work of political thought in at least a generation. Taking up the essential question of how societies develop strong, impersonal, and accountable political institutions, Fukuyama follows the story from the French Revolution to the so-called Arab Spring and the deep dysfunctions of contemporary American politics. He examines the effects of corruption on governance, and why some societies have been successful at rooting it out. He explores the different legacies of colonialism in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and offers a clear-eyed account of why some regions have thrived and developed more quickly than others. And he boldly reckons with the future of democracy in the face of a rising global middle class and entrenched political paralysis in the West.
A sweeping, masterful account of the struggle to create a well-functioning modern state, Political Order and Political Decay is destined to be a classic.

7. Our Chemical Hearts - Krystal Sutherland

John Green meets Rainbow Rowell in this irresistible story of first love, broken hearts, and the golden seams that put them back together again.

Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can't-eat-can't-sleep kind of love that he's been hoping for just hasn't been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he's been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything's about to change.

Grace isn't who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys' clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It's obvious there's something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. And yet, this isn't your average story of boy meets girl. Krystal Sutherland's brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love.

8 - Princesses Behaving Badly - Linda Rodriguez McRobbie

You think you know her story. You’ve read the Brothers Grimm, you’ve watched the Disney cartoons, and you cheered as these virtuous women lived happily ever after. But real princesses didn't always get happy endings. Sure, plenty were graceful and benevolent leaders, but just as many were ruthless in their quest for power—and all of them had skeletons rattling in their royal closets. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe was a Nazi spy. Empress Elisabeth of the Austro-Hungarian empire slept wearing a mask of raw veal. Princess Olga of Kiev slaughtered her way to sainthood while Princess Lakshmibai waged war on the battlefield, charging into combat with her toddler son strapped to her back. Princesses Behaving Badly offers true tales of all these princesses and dozens more in a fascinating read that's pefect for history buffs, feminists, and anyone seeking a different kind of bedtime story.
