*ARC* Book Review: What if it's us? by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera + #BECKYANDADAMPH
Title: What If It's Us Author: Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera Published by: Harper Teen Released Date: October 9, 2018 |
PLOT:
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.
Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?
What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?
But what if it is?
I don't normally read books with two authors because most of the time their writing styles does not mix well together and it is a little awkward and somewhat annoying to read but in this book it is the opposite. I have read both Becky's and Adam's works and their own weakness was masked by the other. Adam brings his great love story capabilities while Becky talent to portray amazing relationship between the characters especially family dynamics was featured. I love how the characters are very relatable with how the authors' narrate and tell the stories of the main characters. I also love the pop culture reference because it makes you feel like you have the same interests with the characters like the Dear Evan Hansen reference and Dylan's coffee addiction.
I also commend the authors for continuously giving narratives to the minorities such as the LGBTQ community and people with different ethic background. I love how diverse the representation here in the book. I remember reading books with only white characters and it irks me because I felt like people like me or people with other ethnic background or people with mental disorders do not deserve narratives. I also love how the authors characterized the characters they wrote. They really put a lot of layers on the characters
The only thing that I did not like is how predictable the story is going to be. Maybe it is because I read both Becky and Adam's books in the past that I know how their storytelling works. But I do love the ending. I know many would hate the ending but I love how satisfying the ending is. It is fantastic. Furthermore, I love the witty antics, especially when Namrata called Hudson only to find out he was not the post office boy so she made up story that she thought he was her friend from camp called Hudson Panini. It was so funny because it was a scenario that would totally happened to my friends and I. Sadly, the story did not go beyond the typical young adult contemporary novel. I hoped that this would be a shocking and impactful.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and judging by the past response to Adam's and Becky's book I that this book will be a huge success. Reader's would definitely learn a lot from this book.

“I believe in love at first sight.
Fate, the universe, all of it. But not how you’re thinking.
I don’t mean it in the our souls were split and
you’re my other half forever and ever sort of way.
I just think you’re meant to meet some people.
I think the universe nudges them into your path.”
“How lucky we are to be alive right now, right?”
“Oh my god, you’re speaking Hamilton
—I’m just so into you. I’m helpless.”
